1 : quod fuit ab initio quod audivimus quod vidimus oculis nostris quod perspeximus et manus nostrae temptaverunt de verbo vitae
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
2 : et vita manifestata est et vidimus et testamur et adnuntiamus vobis vitam aeternam quae erat apud Patrem et apparuit nobis
For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 : quod vidimus et audivimus adnuntiamus et vobis ut et vos societatem habeatis nobiscum et societas nostra sit cum Patre et cum Filio eius Iesu Christo
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
4 : et haec scribimus vobis ut gaudium nostrum sit plenum
And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
5 : et haec est adnuntiatio quam audivimus ab eo et adnuntiamus vobis quoniam Deus lux est et tenebrae in eo non sunt ullae
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 : si dixerimus quoniam societatem habemus cum eo et in tenebris ambulamus mentimur et non facimus veritatem
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 : si autem in luce ambulemus sicut et ipse est in luce societatem habemus ad invicem et sanguis Iesu Filii eius mundat nos ab omni peccato
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 : si dixerimus quoniam peccatum non habemus ipsi nos seducimus et veritas in nobis non est
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 : si confiteamur peccata nostra fidelis est et iustus ut remittat nobis peccata et emundet nos ab omni iniquitate
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 : si dixerimus quoniam non peccavimus mendacem facimus eum et verbum eius non est in nobis
If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 : filioli mei haec scribo vobis ut non peccetis sed et si quis peccaverit advocatum habemus apud Patrem Iesum Christum iustum
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 : et ipse est propitiatio pro peccatis nostris non pro nostris autem tantum sed etiam pro totius mundi
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 : et in hoc scimus quoniam cognovimus eum si mandata eius observemus
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 : qui dicit se nosse eum et mandata eius non custodit mendax est in hoc veritas non est
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 : qui autem servat verbum eius vere in hoc caritas Dei perfecta est in hoc scimus quoniam in ipso sumus
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 : qui dicit se in ipso manere debet sicut ille ambulavit et ipse ambulare
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
7 : carissimi non mandatum novum scribo vobis sed mandatum vetus quod habuistis ab initio mandatum vetus est verbum quod audistis
Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8 : iterum mandatum novum scribo vobis quod est verum et in ipso et in vobis quoniam tenebrae transeunt et lumen verum iam lucet
Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9 : qui dicit se in luce esse et fratrem suum odit in tenebris est usque adhuc
He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 : qui diligit fratrem suum in lumine manet et scandalum in eo non est
He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 : qui autem odit fratrem suum in tenebris est et in tenebris ambulat et nescit quo eat quoniam tenebrae obcaecaverunt oculos eius
But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
12 : scribo vobis filioli quoniam remittuntur vobis peccata propter nomen eius
I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
13 : scribo vobis patres quoniam cognovistis eum qui ab initio est scribo vobis adulescentes quoniam vicistis malignum
I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
14 : scripsi vobis infantes quoniam cognovistis Patrem scripsi vobis patres quia cognovistis eum qui ab initio scripsi vobis adulescentes quia fortes estis et verbum Dei in vobis manet et vicistis malignum
I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
15 : nolite diligere mundum neque ea quae in mundo sunt si quis diligit mundum non est caritas Patris in eo
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 : quoniam omne quod est in mundo concupiscentia carnis et concupiscentia oculorum est et superbia vitae quae non est ex Patre sed ex mundo est
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 : et mundus transit et concupiscentia eius qui autem facit voluntatem Dei manet in aeternum
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 : filioli novissima hora est et sicut audistis quia antichristus venit nunc antichristi multi facti sunt unde scimus quoniam novissima hora est
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 : ex nobis prodierunt sed non erant ex nobis nam si fuissent ex nobis permansissent utique nobiscum sed ut manifesti sint quoniam non sunt omnes ex nobis
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
20 : sed vos unctionem habetis a Sancto et nostis omnia
But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
21 : non scripsi vobis quasi ignorantibus veritatem sed quasi scientibus eam et quoniam omne mendacium ex veritate non est
I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22 : quis est mendax nisi is qui negat quoniam Iesus non est Christus hic est antichristus qui negat Patrem et Filium
Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23 : omnis qui negat Filium nec Patrem habet qui confitetur Filium et Patrem habet
Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
24 : vos quod audistis ab initio in vobis permaneat si in vobis permanserit quod ab initio audistis et vos in Filio et Patre manebitis
Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
25 : et haec est repromissio quam ipse pollicitus est nobis vitam aeternam
And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
26 : haec scripsi vobis de eis qui seducunt vos
These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
27 : et vos unctionem quam accepistis ab eo manet in vobis et non necesse habetis ut aliquis doceat vos sed sicut unctio eius docet vos de omnibus et verum est et non est mendacium et sicut docuit vos manete in eo
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
28 : et nunc filioli manete in eo ut cum apparuerit habeamus fiduciam et non confundamur ab eo in adventu eius
And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
29 : si scitis quoniam iustus est scitote quoniam et omnis qui facit iustitiam ex ipso natus est
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 : carissimi nunc filii Dei sumus et nondum apparuit quid erimus scimus quoniam cum apparuerit similes ei erimus quoniam videbimus eum sicuti est
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 : et omnis qui habet spem hanc in eo sanctificat se sicut et ille sanctus est
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4 : omnis qui facit peccatum et iniquitatem facit et peccatum est iniquitas
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 : et scitis quoniam ille apparuit ut peccata tolleret et peccatum in eo non est
And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 : omnis qui in eo manet non peccat omnis qui peccat non vidit eum nec cognovit eum
Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7 : filioli nemo vos seducat qui facit iustitiam iustus est sicut et ille iustus est
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 : qui facit peccatum ex diabolo est quoniam ab initio diabolus peccat in hoc apparuit Filius Dei ut dissolvat opera diaboli
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 : omnis qui natus est ex Deo peccatum non facit quoniam semen ipsius in eo manet et non potest peccare quoniam ex Deo natus est
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 : in hoc manifesti sunt filii Dei et filii diaboli omnis qui non est iustus non est de Deo et qui non diligit fratrem suum
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11 : quoniam haec est adnuntiatio quam audistis ab initio ut diligamus alterutrum
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 : non sicut Cain ex maligno erat et occidit fratrem suum et propter quid occidit eum quoniam opera eius maligna erant fratris autem eius iusta
Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
13 : nolite mirari fratres si odit vos mundus
Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 : nos scimus quoniam translati sumus de morte in vitam quoniam diligimus fratres qui non diligit manet in morte
We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 : omnis qui odit fratrem suum homicida est et scitis quoniam omnis homicida non habet vitam aeternam in se manentem
Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16 : in hoc cognovimus caritatem quoniam ille pro nobis animam suam posuit et nos debemus pro fratribus animas ponere
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 : qui habuerit substantiam mundi et viderit fratrem suum necesse habere et clauserit viscera sua ab eo quomodo caritas Dei manet in eo
But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 : filioli non diligamus verbo nec lingua sed opere et veritate
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 : in hoc cognoscimus quoniam ex veritate sumus et in conspectu eius suadeamus corda nostra
And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 : quoniam si reprehenderit nos cor maior est Deus corde nostro et novit omnia
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 : carissimi si cor non reprehenderit nos fiduciam habemus ad Deum
Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22 : et quodcumque petierimus accipiemus ab eo quoniam mandata eius custodimus et ea quae sunt placita coram eo facimus
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 : et hoc est mandatum eius ut credamus in nomine Filii eius Iesu Christi et diligamus alterutrum sicut dedit mandatum nobis
And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 : et qui servat mandata eius in illo manet et ipse in eo et in hoc scimus quoniam manet in nobis de Spiritu quem nobis dedit
And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

1 : carissimi nolite omni spiritui credere sed probate spiritus si ex Deo sint quoniam multi pseudoprophetae exierunt in mundum
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 : in hoc cognoscitur Spiritus Dei omnis spiritus qui confitetur Iesum Christum in carne venisse ex Deo est
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 : et omnis spiritus qui solvit Iesum ex Deo non est et hoc est antichristi quod audistis quoniam venit et nunc iam in mundo est
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 : vos ex Deo estis filioli et vicistis eos quoniam maior est qui in vobis est quam qui in mundo
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 : ipsi de mundo sunt ideo de mundo loquuntur et mundus eos audit
They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 : nos ex Deo sumus qui novit Deum audit nos qui non est ex Deo non audit nos in hoc cognoscimus Spiritum veritatis et spiritum erroris
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7 : carissimi diligamus invicem quoniam caritas ex Deo est et omnis qui diligit ex Deo natus est et cognoscit Deum
Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 : qui non diligit non novit Deum quoniam Deus caritas est
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 : in hoc apparuit caritas Dei in nobis quoniam Filium suum unigenitum misit Deus in mundum ut vivamus per eum
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 : in hoc est caritas non quasi nos dilexerimus Deum sed quoniam ipse dilexit nos et misit Filium suum propitiationem pro peccatis nostris
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 : carissimi si sic Deus dilexit nos et nos debemus alterutrum diligere
Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12 : Deum nemo vidit umquam si diligamus invicem Deus in nobis manet et caritas eius in nobis perfecta est
No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13 : in hoc intellegimus quoniam in eo manemus et ipse in nobis quoniam de Spiritu suo dedit nobis
Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14 : et nos vidimus et testificamur quoniam Pater misit Filium salvatorem mundi
And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15 : quisque confessus fuerit quoniam Iesus est Filius Dei Deus in eo manet et ipse in Deo
Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16 : et nos cognovimus et credidimus caritati quam habet Deus in nobis Deus caritas est et qui manet in caritate in Deo manet et Deus in eo
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17 : in hoc perfecta est caritas nobiscum ut fiduciam habeamus in die iudicii quia sicut ille est et nos sumus in hoc mundo
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 : timor non est in caritate sed perfecta caritas foras mittit timorem quoniam timor poenam habet qui autem timet non est perfectus in caritate
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 : nos ergo diligamus quoniam Deus prior dilexit nos
We love him, because he first loved us.
20 : si quis dixerit quoniam diligo Deum et fratrem suum oderit mendax est qui enim non diligit fratrem suum quem vidit Deum quem non vidit quomodo potest diligere
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 : et hoc mandatum habemus ab eo ut qui diligit Deum diligat et fratrem suum
And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

1 : omnis qui credit quoniam Iesus est Christus ex Deo natus est et omnis qui diligit eum qui genuit diligit eum qui natus est ex eo
Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
2 : in hoc cognoscimus quoniam diligimus natos Dei cum Deum diligamus et mandata eius faciamus
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
3 : haec est enim caritas Dei ut mandata eius custodiamus et mandata eius gravia non sunt
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
4 : quoniam omne quod natum est ex Deo vincit mundum et haec est victoria quae vincit mundum fides nostra
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5 : quis est qui vincit mundum nisi qui credit quoniam Iesus est Filius Dei
Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 : hic est qui venit per aquam et sanguinem Iesus Christus non in aqua solum sed in aqua et sanguine et Spiritus est qui testificatur quoniam Christus est veritas
This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
7 : quia tres sunt qui testimonium dant
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
8 : Spiritus et aqua et sanguis et tres unum sunt
And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
9 : si testimonium hominum accipimus testimonium Dei maius est quoniam hoc est testimonium Dei quod maius est quia testificatus est de Filio suo
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
10 : qui credit in Filio Dei habet testimonium Dei in se qui non credit Filio mendacem facit eum quoniam non credidit in testimonio quod testificatus est Deus de Filio suo
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
11 : et hoc est testimonium quoniam vitam aeternam dedit nobis Deus et haec vita in Filio eius est
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 : qui habet Filium habet vitam qui non habet Filium Dei vitam non habet
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13 : haec scripsi vobis ut sciatis quoniam vitam habetis aeternam qui creditis in nomine Filii Dei
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
14 : et haec est fiducia quam habemus ad eum quia quodcumque petierimus secundum voluntatem eius audit nos
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
15 : et scimus quoniam audit nos quicquid petierimus scimus quoniam habemus petitiones quas postulavimus ab eo
And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
16 : qui scit fratrem suum peccare peccatum non ad mortem petet et dabit ei vitam peccantibus non ad mortem est peccatum ad mortem non pro illo dico ut roget
If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17 : omnis iniquitas peccatum est et est peccatum non ad mortem
All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
18 : scimus quoniam omnis qui natus est ex Deo non peccat sed generatio Dei conservat eum et malignus non tangit eum
We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
19 : scimus quoniam ex Deo sumus et mundus totus in maligno positus est
And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
20 : et scimus quoniam Filius Dei venit et dedit nobis sensum ut cognoscamus verum Deum et simus in vero Filio eius hic est verus Deus et vita aeterna
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
21 : filioli custodite vos a simulacris
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
